  Getwell Clean-Up 2010

The sun shone brightly for more than 200 volunteers who gathered for a massive clean-up event hosted by SRVS on April 10.  It was the second annual clean up of the Getwell corridor organized by members of the Getwell Business Community Group which includes SRVS, and the first time for the group to partner with the City of Memphis and the Division of Community Enhancement and Memphis City Beautiful Commission.  The event was heralded as a Spirit of Memphis sanctioned event.

“We look forward to partnering with all the volunteers who turned out today to help improve the quality of life for the citizens of this community,” said an appreciative Jeffrie Bruton, executive director of SRVS. Together with individuals from the Mid-South community, volunteers from the Getwell group joined hands to celebrate the Spirit of  Memphis and its movement to turn the tide of self-esteem for Memphians.  More than thirty companies, churches, schools and organizations participated in the clean-up, picking up trash and debris within a 3 mile radius from Getwell and Knight Arnold.

Representative teams came from Allenbrooke Nursing Home, American Way Middle School, Delta Medical Center, FAA Credit Union, FedEx,  Lipscomb and Pitts Breakfast Club, MBI, Memphis Urban League, On Assignment Ministries, QPSI, Sam’s Club, Sigma Beta Fraternity, Small Business Chamber, South Park Elementary School, SRVS, University of Memphis Spirit of Memphis, Volunteer Memphis, Waste Management, and Zoe  Academy.

Eldra White, executive director of Memphis City Beautiful Commission, orchestrated the clean-up logistics and transport of teams to their various pick up sites.  She announced the event as a sanctioned Spirit of Memphis event and all the volunteers cheerfully took the Spirit of Memphis Citizenship Oath, “To celebrate what is great about Memphis; to inspire fellow citizens to be proud of Memphis; to defend  Memphis against negativity in thought, word or deed, both Forbes and domestic. One Memphis, on the  river, indivisible, with spirit and pride for all!”

SRVS staff and members of the Getwell group would like to thank all the many volunteers and contributing partners who helped make this event a success including the City of Memphis Department of Community Enhancement, Memphis City Beautiful Commission, Memphis Police Department, as well as Delta Medical Center, Sam’s Club, Kroger and Clean Memphis for providing breakfast snacks and bottled water.
