Karl Krieger doesn’t have to think long about what he likes best about his job as a dining room attendant at the Zaxby’s restaurant located at 375 New Byhalia Road in Collierville, where he has worked since September 2016. “I get to help others,” he said recently in the restaurant dining room. “It feels great.”Karl’s exemplary initiative, punctuality and positive attitude led to him being an overwhelming favorite for April Employee of the Month in a poll of his co-workers and managers. He has held other jobs. Several years ago he worked at SRVS, Tennessee’s largest provider of services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. He worked in the SRVS occupational workshop and also at local companies where he developed his job skills. For 15 years he was employed at another restaurant until it closed. Karl, now 52, was not one to be idle. The Tennessee Department of Vocational Rehabilitation referred him to SRVS for supported employment services, where he was assigned to SRVS employment consultant Deb Nichols to help him with his job search. Based on his marketable and transferable skills and work history, Nichols connected Karl and Zaxby’s. “Karl loves his job at Zaxby's, he always stays on task,” Nichols said. “Being punctual is a must with him and missing work is not an option. He is proud to wear his Zaxby's uniform."
Watching Karl intently move about the Zaxby’s dining room, it’s clear he’s a man on a mission doing work that gives him personal satisfaction and fulfillment.
“He has a great personality and work ethic,” said Nikki Trim, the restaurant’s general manager. “He doesn’t stop until the job is done.” When he talks about his place of employment, a sense of pride is evident in Karl. “So far Zaxby’s is the best job,” he said. “Like one big happy family.”
